Nursing Students' Experience on Pediatric Nursing Practice

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to understand nursing students' experience of pediatric nursing practices using a phenomenological research method.

Methods: Participants were 3rd and 4th grade students in nursing who had experience in pediatric nursing practice. A total of 18 nursing students were divided into two focus groups. For data analysis, Colaizzi¡¯s (1978) phenomenological method was used, in order to bringing light to the exact meaning of the research participants lively experiences.

Results: The study results consisted of five theme clusters, 10 themes, and 26 sub-themes. Theme clusters were ¡°nursing
activity difficulties caused by parents¡±, ¡°difficulties in controlling the child¡±, ¡°help the child¡¯s hospitalization¡±, ¡°improvement of communication skills¡±, and ¡°happy memories with the children¡±.

Conclusion: According to the results, pediatric nursing practice for nursing students held much difficulties in relationship formation with the children and the parents, and also in educating the parents. Therefore, education program focusing on understanding the characteristics of parents and using appropriate communication skills should be developed to help nursing students adapt to pediatric nursing practices.
